The ABC’s of Piano

Interesting article for beginner piano lessons

via Easy To Learn Piano by admin on 9/8/10

In basic piano theory, there are a few simple lessons that anyone who is capable of learning on an elementary school level can pick up. These include recognizing the patterns in naming the piano notes and actually naming them on the piano. With knowledge of these foundational lessons, it’s possible to advance into many more lessons that build upon the basics.

Regardless of whether you have a desire to be able to play the piano by reading music or if you desire to play strictly by ear, learning the ABC’s of the piano will help you better understand what you’re doing and be able to explain it to someone else who may benefit. Piano has been often discussed in correlation with mathematics and people who do well in piano tend to be better at mathematics. Piano uses patterns and methods based on the foundation information. Mathematics does it as well. Just like you learn the numbers and addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in math, you have to learn the notes in piano.

The piano uses the letters A, B, C, D, E, F, and G to name the letters. See…that’s not too difficult of a lesson. To add on to this, when you’re naming the notes, when you get to G, you start back over at A. So, for instance you would name the notes, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C, and so forth. It’s really that simple. Learn this and you’ll know it for the rest of your life.

In addition to learning the letters, naming the white keys on the piano is also simple. If you look at the piano, you’ll notice that there are groups of two black keys and three black keys. In order to name the white notes, you can use the black keys as a reference. The note to the left of the group of two black keys is “C”. The note to the right of that group is “E”. The note to the left of the group of three black notes is “F” and the note to the right of that group is “B”. If you learn where C is and where F is, you can locate all of the other notes very easily.

After knowing these ABC’s of piano, you can then step up to playing be sight reading or playing by ear.
